500 youngsters raise funds for CO2 reduction solution that could feed Africa

On Tuesday 25th March 2008, 500 teenagers congregated at Area Nightclub Watford to raise in excess of £2500 of funds for C-Green Solutions - a research project which aims to convert CO2 into food and fuel. The process known as Carbon Cycling uses algae to convert excess carbon dioxide into fuel and immunising foods - extremely rapidly.

The event, which was supported by top UK rock band Mars Patrol, raised enough to keep the research organisation afloat for five months whilst collecting signatures on a petition to deliver to the National Environment Research Council.

Guests were all personally invited over MySpace by two local 15-year old youth leaders Jasmine and Sophie. Their aim is to multiply supporters by ten, taking the membership to over 20,000.

The aim of the project is to support the work of the Global Eco movement which amassed 30 years of research into the Carbon Cycling process in the 1970's. Led by one of the movement's few surviving pioneers, 78 year old former cameraman and green activist Harry Hart, C-Green Solutions has attracted support from a number of participating companies and organisations including Great Stuff Hydroponics, Ocean Grown and many local small businesses in Watford.

Small-scale research and testing is being carried out by students at St Michael's Specialist College Watford, funded by a Nuffield Science Bursary, under supervision of Rothamstead Research. Fundraising and awareness is being spearheaded by FREdome run by Watford-based social entrepreneur Greg Peachey who said:

"We're delighted by the response of the young people to the C-Green message. All of them seem deeply affected by the negativity around them to do with global warming, peak oil and food shortages and they are excited that the research is being done by other teenagers. C-Green Solutions is radical - it unites several distinct scientific disciplines including plant chemistry, nutrition, energy production, soil improvement, reforestation and climate alteration. The challenge is for scientists to see a way to work together across disciplines to explore a hugely ambitious new approach to solving the problems of desertification in Africa. Our aim is to attract signatures to a petition to the National Environment Research Council to release funds to allow these ground-breaking ideas to be developed before it is too late."
